1737, Comm. on paper currency. Report

The report of the Committee of the Commons House of Assembly of South Carolina on the state of paper currency in that province, published in London
in 1737. The committee considered the use an paper currency and concluded that it was a necessity, given the negative imbalance of trade,
specifically pointing to the importation of Negro slaves. The committee also in pointed to British traders and merchants as needing paper currency, rather than
rely only on gold or silver in their dealing with the province. Also included were various letters from merchants, the King's instructions to the
governor, and portions of the act to reprint paper bills of credit. Of note there were accounts of the number of ships and vessels entering the port of
Charleston, as well as the number of Negroes, among the "imports," from 1706 to 1739. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by
