Description and Holding Information
1700-1872, Digest of the Laws of Pennsylvania (10th edition)
A Digest of the Laws of Pennsylvania, from the year [1700] to the 10th day of July, [1872]. Originally compiled by John Purdon. Tenth Edition
published in two volumes by Kay & Brother (Philadelphia 1873). Contents include, in volume I, the Preface; tables of cases cited and statutes; state and
federal constitutions; digested material on alphabetical topics Abatement through Justices of the Peace; and in volume II, Laborers through Workhouses;
with an Appendix and the Index to the set. (The preface states the editor’s intention was to provide “a Complete Analytical View of the Law on any given
Subject presented to the eye in a continuous connection.” Further: “This has been effected by grouping together every Act and Section bearing upon
the particular subject, and by placing the dates of the Statutes in the margin; while, to facilitate reference to every portion of the work, in addition
to a new and very full general Index (in which the section as well as the page is given), there is prefixed to each Title, a Table of its Contents,
together with Marginal Notes and Foot Notes of the Judicial Decisions, not only of the Supreme Court, but of every other Pennsylvania tribunal, to the
reported or unreported decisions of which the Editor had access; these have been brought down to the period of publication, including the cases in the
sixty-eighth volume of the Pennsylvania State Reports.”)
