Board of Public Works. Special report on effects of suspending public works, 1841
|
|
Doc. No. 74 Special report of the Board of Public Works [Ohio] in relation to the probable effect of a suspension of public works. March 6, 1841. The Board was supervising the construction of five canals and one turnpike. All the canals would suffer severe physical degradation if they were abandoned; something on the order of $1,500,000 in losses could be expected. Most of the canals were near completion and nearly every mile was under contract. Reneging on the contracts would cost huge money in contractor claims. The interest on all the loans already in place would have to be paid without any assistance from tolls which would keep rising as canals were completed.
