Governor. Correspondence concerning occupation of forts, 1861
1861 Correspondence between Governor John W. Ellis and the federal government regarding the takeover of Fort Caswell by state militia troops and
citizens. The governor noted in his correspondence to President James Buchanan that an order to restore federal control had been made; however Ellis also
expressed concern at the purpose federal troops were inside the state. In response, the War Department indicated that occupation was not intended,
unless circumstances changed. Other letters from the state militia and the like was also included. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of titles
originally held by the University of North Carolina Library at Chapel Hill).
