Description and Holding Information
Secretary of State. Statement on contributions to literary institutions, 1832
House No. 26 Statement of donations made by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to literary institutions [except academies] On February 7, 1832, the
Secretary of State responded to a request to provide this information. He noted a similar request in 1827 and said no grants had been given to
colleges since that time, so he submitted the 1827 data instead. The list was organized by college; Harvard had the lion's share of the entries, but they
ceased in 1814. Other colleges had received very little. There were five pages of a chart showing the many townships and parts of townships that were
surveyed from public lands and provided to many academies and other institutions. Such grants were for undeveloped land, so they certainly did not
help any school make payroll, but hopefully acquired value over time. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts
State Library).
