House. Comm. on Manufactures. Report, 1840
House No. 34 On February 19, 1840, the group that studied the Governor's remarks on manufactures submitted a report. The Governor did not like all
the paper money floating around and thought it induced foreign manufacturers to flood the country with goods. The Governor also thought the same
firms were gathering up paper money and exchanging it for specie which then left the country. The committee was not impressed by these arguments. The
suppression of small bills would be hard on country banks, who dealt in smaller sums. The committee thought the Legislature should officially condemn
the National Independent Treasury, but they thought Congress was too caught up in its own drama to care. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title
originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
