General Court. Act in further addition to the serveral acts on highways, 1824
|
|
In 1824, General Court presented An Act in further addition to the several Acts now in force respecting Highways. A surveyors was not to spend more than was appropriated for road and bridge repair, but it was his duty to tell the Town Selectmen of the shortfall. If a surveyor failed to do that, he was liable to pay damage claims filed by aggrieved townspeople who suffered damage from bad roads. If the Selectmen failed to give direction to the Surveyor, the Selectmen were liable for damage claims filed by townspeople who suffered damage from a bad road. The Act never said what to do about the lack of funds. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
