SEE ALSO 52566 House No. 1 The memorial of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons of Massachusetts said it first began in 1733 as a fraternity and had begun a fund for charitable purposes. In 1817, the Lodge sought and received a charter of incorporation thinking to better protect its charitable fund. It could have $20,000 in real estate and $60,000 in personal estate. The years went by without incident. In 1830, the Lodge decided to build its own building. It applied to the Legislature to change its real estate amount to $60,000 and personal estate to $20,000. To everyone's surprise, it was not granted. The Lodge had to finish its half-built building. The organization was threatened with the revocation of its corporate status, so it decided to voluntarily do that. The letter so stating was included. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
