SEE ALSO 52912 Senate No. 12 Message relating to the survey of the Commonwealth. On January 31, 1832, the Governor sent the report of the 1831 work by the surveyor. James Stevens, Engineer, said he had had the instruments made at a factory in Troy that were absolutely excellent and cost half the price of imported tools. He then described in technical detail what he and his crew had done during the year. This was the first such scientific measuring done in the entire country; he explained how the data could be used by many different entities. He sent a financial report that showed he had spent all but $233.75 cents of the appropriation and expected the labor for 1832 would cost about $5,000.
