State Engineer. Special report on Bayou cut-off, 1859
|
|
Special report of the State Engineer on Bayou Cut-Off to the Legislature of the State of Louisiana. February 1859 Baton Rouge : J.M. Taylor, 1859. J. J. Fremeaux did the survey of the Cut-Off to see if the Red River could be turned to the Mississippi through the Bayou. It was a popular idea, but the measurements showed it to be impractical; the Mississippi and the land between it and the Bayou were just too much higher. The measurements followed along with a history of the water courses. Hebert spent a long time discussing the Red and Atchafalaya Rivers and their connection--or not--to the Mississippi. All this was difficult to understand without a map.
