University of Louisiana. Board of Administrators. Report, <1850>-
Report of the Board of Administration of the University of Louisiana. [The report is in very small print.] The Board was deep in a struggle to build a university from the ground up. Faculties of Law and Medicine had been created and a prep school begun, but it was going to founder for lack of funds to pay teachers. There was a financial statement beginning in 1848 that mostly showed amounts spent on creating buildings and repairing others taken over. They said politely that if the State was serious about a University, it had to plan on considerable outlay and soon, otherwise the Board's hard work would have been in vain. University reputations could only be built by degrees.

Report of the University of Louisiana. In January 1857, the Board of Administrators sent a report to the Legislature. In eight years of operation, the Law School had graduated 243, roughly 30/yr. The Medical School had graduated 2,300, with a current class of 240. The faculties of Arts and Sciences had not been funded at all, so young people had to go to a hostile environment in the North for a college education. The State had spent money to create other small colleges in outlying areas, but had not done much for the school in the population center. The University needed $2,000 for a library, $30,000 for a dormitory and classroom building, and at least $10,000/yr for salaries for a President and professors in Arts and Sciences. There is a fine line between advocacy and scolding.

Report of the Board of Administrators of the University of Louisiana. General Assembly. The report for 1858 was dated March 2, 1859. [Little black spots make this report somewhat difficult to read.] There was a report on the student population which totaled 493. The school had a real need for a science faculty; these men could teach and provide useful atmospheric and riverine data. Both the Law School and Medical School needed libraries. A plan for a Normal School was in progress.
