Doc. No. 72 Communication from the citizens of Illinois on the subject of national defence communicated to the Legislature of the State of Ohio.
February 12, 1842. The citizens were afraid of invaders, along the coasts, chiefly by Great Britain, because the Navy was so weak. Using inflammatory
language, they urged the construction of a fire ship, developed by an engineer from Illinois. This communication was signed by about 100 people.
Pages 6-14 described the ship and its testing.
