(1793–95), with the last corrections by the author, and with notes and additions by Edward Christian, Vol. 1–4, London, pr. by A. Strahan and W. Woodfall for T. Cadell, 1793–95. (This is the authentic Twelfth Edition. It was originally published in numbers, each number containing the portrait of a judge. This was done by the proprietors and disclaimed by the editor in a footnote which reads: The proprietors has prepared the prints for this edition before their engagement with the editor, who reserved to himself no discretion with regard to the manner of publication. A publication in numbers is in general not thought creditable to an author who takes upon himself any degree of responsibility in a literary work ....This is the first edition containing notes by Edward Christian, a barrister at law and professor of laws in the University of Cambridge. A selection of Christian’s notes is included in most American editions of the Commentaries. )
