1842, Mather, Catalogue of specimens collected on the Geological Survey of Ohio
|
|
Doc. No. 76 Catalogue of the geological specimens collected on the late survey of the State of Ohio / by W.W. Mather, State Geologist. February 25, 1842. There were nine sets of specimens to go with the report, two for the State, and the others for colleges, libraries, etc. He detailed the effort required to put the sets together. He had done chemical analysis of several specimens and had done the same for specimens brought by the public. He thought it was an excellent idea to provide free analysis so people could rely on unbiased information, not quack science, and act accordingly. He thought his office could be kept open for about $3,000/year. He explained the delay in exhibiting the collection. There followed detailed tables about the specimens: box number, specimen letter, collector's name, description of the specimen and where found, letter and number of boxes. Sadly, the first two pages were illegible, but all the rest were good. Coal was mentioned frequently.
