National Road Engineer. Report in reply to request for information, 1843
SEE ALSO 43780, 43776 Pub. Doc. No. 66 Report of the Resident Engineer on the National Road, in answer to a resolution of the Senate, calling for
information. February 20, 1843. The Senate sent seven questions focusing on repairs. John Yountz, the Resident Engineer, was not happy with the
condition of the road, but it was too late in the season to do much. He changed the repair system from day labor to contract. The toll system had been
changed, so he explained that. The law, especially the toll structure, needed to be simplified. The Ohio portion of the Road still carried
liabilities of $22,000, but he recommended a 20% reduction in tolls, especially for empty wagons, to boost usage.
