Senate. Rules of order, 1879
Rules of order of the Senate to which is annexed the Constitution of the State of Louisiana. Adopted January 1879. New Orleans : Democrat
Publishing Company, 1879. The Index to the rules was on p. 3, the officers of the Senate on p. 5, and the order of business on p. 7. The rules were from p.
9-23. The Constitution began on p. 27. It had been adopted on March 7, 1868, when the state was working itself free of federal control. The usual
"all men were free and equal," freedom of religion, no slavery, free press, but one unusual provision was that all people were welcome on public
conveyances. There was a long section on legislative districts, followed by the powers and duties of the Governor, the judiciary, and the General Assembly.
There was to be no government support for private schools. There was a short section on the militia, directions for revising the document, and
amendments about State debt.
