Committee examined the State Penitentiary, the Institute for the Deaf, Mute, and Blind, and the State Capitol. The buildings had been returned to the
State by the military in February 1866. At the penitentiary, the cell buildings, cotton factory, female prison, and brick sheds were all destroyed.
Many other buildings had substantial damage. The damage estimate for part of the prison was $72,219. At the Institute for the Deaf, etc., the damage
was $5,945. The interior of the State Capitol was burned out, but the exterior walls were still good. All the doors, windows and furnishings would
have to be replaced. The repair estimate was $171,396 and furnishings $199,396. A grand total for all the buildings was $279,560.
