Description and Holding Information
Bissell, Letters and documents, 1800-20 (MS)
1800-1820 documents and correspondence of General Daniel Bissell, who served for a time as the Commander of the United States Military Department
which comprised the Territory of Missouri. These documents related to the troubles and dangers of the early settlers of the Mississippi Valley.
Included in these 31 entries are correspondence of William Clark, who was part of the Lewis and Clark expedition (see no. 11 and 30). A notation at the
beginning of the first document indicated that this collection was donated by Sextus(?) Shearer, Jr. in 1856. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of titles
originally held by the St. Louis Mercantile Library).
