**House No. 2 On January 5, 1831, the Secretary of State reported the expense of his office in 1830. His salary and two clerks headed the list,
plus the services of nine other clerks during the legislative session, for a total of $4,791.98. **House No. 2 Expenses of the Secretary's [State]
Office. On January 1, 1840, the Secretary reported the financials for his office. He had to use nine additional clerks again, mostly for the Board of
