1649 Law of Maryland Concerning Religion, also called the Maryland Toleration Act, mandated religious tolerance for Trinitarian Christians. It was passed on April 21, 1649, by the assembly of the Maryland colony, in St. Mary's City. Included was punishment by death for blaspheming or denying Jesus Christ, as well was a fine for calling anyone in a reproachful manner various names, including Roundhead, Papist, Lutheran, and others.
