Adjutant General. Bounties paid by towns to soldiers, 1864
On March 9, 1864, the Adjutant General responded to a House inquiry with five pages of tables showing the amounts of money paid as bounties to
soldiers. It was significant money--nearly $4,000,000 total. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine State Library and the
Library of Congress).
Title:   To Hon. Nelson Dingley, Speaker of the House of Representatives : Sir:--In conformity with an order of the House of Representatives, passed January 23, 1864, directing me to ascertain for the information of the House, " by circular letter of inquiry, the amount of bounties paid by each city, town and plantation in this State to soldiers furnished by them respectively under the several call for troops ..." .
