Commissioners to Settle with the Sureties of B.D. Peck. Report, 1861
Fortieth Legislature. House. No. 39. Communication from the Governor transmitting the report of the Commissioners appointed to settle with the
sureties on the bonds of B.D. Peck, late State Treasurer. The Commissioners began work in August 1860. There first expectation was that one company owed
$62,523 and the other $14,352. However, they re-examined who was responsible for what timeframe and changed the amounts. The 1859 sureties came in
and bargained to provide $7,000 in cash right away, and then $10,000 per year for three years. The 1858 surety challenged everything and only wanted
to pay $5,000, but that was not acceptable to the Commissioners. After much back and forth, those sureties wanted to go to Supreme Judicial Court,
but the Commissioners did not have authority to do that. When they reported to the Governor, he ordered the Attorney General to file suit against the
sureties for 1858. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine Historical Society Library, the Maine State Library, and
the Library of Congress).
