Description and Holding Information
1860-03-03, Memorial relating to the disposition of the settling lands of Maine
Thirty-ninth Legislature. House. No. 30. Memorial relating to the disposition of the settling lands of Maine. On March 3, 1860, Mr. Gilbert took
issue with only allowing 200 acres for a settlement lot. He understood it was to discourage speculators, but it certainly discouraged those who wanted
to use scalable methods in agriculture. Machinery, the encouragement of necessary artisans, and a division of labor were most useful on a very large
farm and was more likely to yield results and build wealth. The Legislature ought to determine a way to sell large acreage to those who could make
it pay. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
