House. Act to impose a duty on the sale of wines and spirituous liquors, 1828
SEE ALSO 51807 H.R. No. 44 An Act to impose a duty on the sale of wine and spirituous liquors within the Commonwealth, 1828. Any licensee was to pay
an annual unstated cents per gallon duty on alcohol sold. Wholesalers and retailers were defined. Victuallers, innkeepers, and taverners were
included and required to have a special license to sell alcohol. All those affected had to post two payment bonds and keep careful records, with the oath
they had to swear each year included. Penalties for failure to pay or attempts to subvert the duty were listed. The local clerk paid the money
forward to the county clerk who paid it forward to the state treasurer. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts
