SEE ALSO 56420 Forty-fourth Legislature. House. No. 36. The Committee on State Lands and State Roads submitted: Resolves making appropriation in aid of the construction of the Milford and Princeton Turnpike, February 11, 1865. The land agent would sell public lands to realize $30,000, which the Governor would distribute in lumps of $10,000 as construction progressed. Statement of Facts: this report compared two existing routes from Calais to Bangor, but both had substantial drawbacks. There were two railroads operating successfully that could be linked by the proposed turnpike of forty-five miles, cost estimate $50,000, saving ten hours of travel time. For several cogent reasons, the military commander defending the eastern frontier was anxious for the turnpike to begin.
