Senate. Comm. on Agriculture. Report on a scientific survey of the State, 1861
|
|
Fortieth Legislature. Senate. No. 19. Report of the Committee on Agriculture, February 27, 1861. The Committee reported a groundswell of petitions for a scientific survey of the state. A loss of population reflected a loss of hope of making a good living and the people did not have enough knowledge to help themselves. They needed the light of science! Resolves in favor of a scientific survey of the state. The Governor would contract with suitable people to survey the geology, agriculture, natural history, and physical geography of Maine, gathering specimens as they worked. The team was to report every January. $4,000 was appropriated for the effort. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine Historical Society Library, the Maine State Library, and the Library of Congress).
