Description and Holding Information
1867-68, Virginia Constitutional Convention. Journal
1867-1868 Journal of the Constitutional Convention of the State of Virginia in Richmond. The convention opened on December 3, 1867 pursuant to an
act of Congress passed on March 23, 1867, and by order of General Schofield, who was serving as the military administrator in Virginia. Included were
two clauses were included; one which denied the vote to any office holder in rebel government and another which required an "iron-clad oath" that a
prospective voter had never "voluntarily borne arms against the United States." Of note, General Schofield separated these two clauses from the
remainder of the Constitution during the ratification vote and there "obnoxious clauses" were subsequently defeated. See LLMC #22276 and 61077 for related
