Description and Holding Information
1861, Doc. 35-36, Military and naval preparations of Virginia
Constitutional Convention Document 35 and 36, which contained Governor John Letcher's communication and supplemental communication regarding the
military and naval preparations for the defense of Virginia. Included were a number of appendices, which consisted of reports from numerous sources about
these issues. Of note, in the supplemental report, the governor requested that the Convention take legislative action against those business who
were extorting the population with highly inflated prices. The governor also expressed concern that most volunteers' terms of military service would end
in April to May, 1862; he requested action to ensure a proper army until independence is recognized. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title
