Description and Holding Information
1861, General Convention. Journal
Journal of the Acts and proceeding of the Virginia General Convention in Richmond and met beginning on February 13, 1861. The second document was
appendix to the journal, which commenced with a record of the proceedings and consisted generally of the voting records of various proposed amendments
and sections. Of note, the initial vote for secession on April 4th was badly defeated. However, the convention voted on April 16, 1861 to go into
secret session; see LLMC #22212-13 for journal proceedings and ordinances of the secret session. Ultimately, the ordinance of secession was passed the
following day, subject to a referendum held on May 23, 1861. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
