1835-12-29, Cherokee Tribe-U.S. (North Carolina ed.)
|
|
December 29, 1835 Treaty between the United States of American and the Chiefs, Head Men and People of the Cherokee Tribe of Indians, with supplementary articles of March 1, 1836, and ratified on May 23, 1836. This version was the North Carolina edition for the state Senate. Of note, the treaty established terms under which the entire Cherokee Nation ceded its territory in the southeast and agreed to move west to the Indian Territory. Although the treaty was not approved by the Cherokee National Council nor signed by Principal Chief John Ross, it was amended and ratified by the U.S. Senate in March 1836, and became the legal basis for the forcible removal known as the Trail of Tears. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of titles originally held by the University of North Carolina Library at Chapel Hill).
