1792, Blood, Sermon before the Legislature (inc.)
An election sermon preached by Rev. Caleb Blood, pastor of a Baptist church, to the legislature of Vermont, convened in Rutland on October 11, 1791,
the day prior to the general election. Preached to the legislature and using numerous Scripture references, Blood emphasized the need to follow
divine rules in the governance of mortals. Combining both God’s judgment and grace, this lengthy sermon eventually stated his them that “the law of love
to God and Man, is essential to a truly patriotic character” (page 31). This sermon is interesting in that it combined mercy and judgment and the need
for venerable and respectful rulers, reminding the members of the legislature of their duties to the people. Of note, this is an incomplete
document, as the final pages are missing. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of titles originally held by the Vermont Historical Society).
