1841-03-10, Petition against fraudulent bank bills

Senate No. 53 In March 1841, twenty-nine people sent a petition pleading for the Legislature to improve the security of paper money. The group
suggested requiring money to carry a check digit, already in use by some banks. On March 10, 1841, the Committee on Banks and Banking responded with a
report. The check digit was a good idea, but the Committee was loath to require it, since printing plates were very expensive. The Committee
encouraged banks to adopt the idea voluntarily. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
