The importance of moderation in civil rulers. A sermon delivered before His Excellency, Edward Everett, Governor, the Honorable Council and the
Legislature of Massachusetts at the annual election January 1, 1840 by John Codman, D.D. pastor of the Second Church in Dorchester. Boston : Dutton &
Wentworth, 1840. His text was "Let our moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at Hand." Rev. Codman noted two centuries of elections and two
centuries of acknowledging the hand of God in all things. It was important to pay attention to the public mood, but to think beyond the moment. Civil
government should stifle the unquiet spirit and avoid reckless agitation. The wise Legislature would not attempt change without great caution and
deliberation. He discussed temperance, dueling, education, prisons, and wished for a spirit of forbearance. Legislators should not forget personal
