Senate No. 16 Petition of the Western Railroad Corporation for the establishment of a bank to aid in constructing its railroad. [There is a large
blot on p. 1-3 and 6] As usual, the Corporation had found it needed a lot more money to complete its railroad. The Corporation breathlessly
represented itself as doing the "peoples work." Other states were working feverishly to complete railroads--Massachusetts was falling behind. The Western
Railroad could get goods to New York's markets even in the winter without the perils of the fearful sea. The men provided a long list of other
advantages to completing the railroad. They asked for a charter for a bank capitalized at $5,000,000. Anyone in the state could buy shares; the bank would
follow the usual rules and regulations. The Governor was in favor of the effort. Nine men signed the petition, which was referred to the House
Committee on Banks and Banking on January 16, 1836. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
