1835-02-13, Memorial on repeal of the License Law
SEE ALSO 52753 House No. 50 On February 13, 1835, 2,965 women from Lowell submitted a memorial to the Legislature in opposition to repealing the
license law. The women wanted towns or other jurisdictions to be able to vote to exclude alcohol entirely. It was women and children who suffered
most from the evils of drink; a seller of alcohol was a destroyer of homes and people. Pages 5-39 was a great find: the names, location and date of
activity of all the women. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
Title:   Memorial of Mary C. Rand and two thousand nine hundred and sixty-four others, female inhabitants in the town of Lowell, for the repeal of the present License Law : and that such laws may be enacted, as will protect them and their sex from the evils resulting from the manufacture and sale of ardent spirits.
