1833, New England Asylum for the Blind. Memorial
|
|
House No. 22 A committee on behalf of the New England Asylum for the Blind submitted a memorial. The group sent Dr. Howe to Europe to study the
education of the blind. He returned with a mathematics and literature teacher and a teacher of the mechanical arts. As an experiment, the group had the
teachers work with six blind children. Now, the Asylum has run out of money. On January 15, 1833, the House and Senate each received the memorial.
Their report was enthusiastic about the fine results of the teaching experiment and recognized the state's obligation to educate all its children.
Resolved: the Commonwealth would provide four quarterly payments totaling $6,000 to the Trustees of the New England Asylum for the Blind to board and
educate twenty poor blind children between the ages of six and twenty-four for one year. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by
