1693, Rules for the Society of Negroes (1714?)
1693 Rules for the Society of Negroes, which listed ten rules dealing with morals and religious matters. A note prefixed to the rules indicated that
Cotton Mather wrote these rules and that this was a printing of a lost copy of 1693. The note also mentioned that, at the time written, only the New
York Public Library had the only other copy of these rules. Rule IX makes mention of the work the "Negro Christianized" which appeared in 1713. The
publication date is inferred from this evidence. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of titles originally held by the American Antiquarian Society
Library in Worcester, Massachusetts).
