Description and Holding Information
1841, People's Convention. Article of elective franchise (MS)
Manuscript article of Constitutional Convention regarding elective franchise. Of note, there were edits in this document, with some additions,
deletions, and corrections. A notation at the bottom of the document indicated that this was adopted by the convention on November 6, 1841. Of note, this
was part of the unsanctioned "Dorr Rebellion," when middle-class residents sought to significantly reduce the property requirements for voting. Led
by Thomas Wilson Dorr, this attempt to change the constitution and a subsequent armed rebellion were unsuccessful, but they ultimately led to a new
constitution which liberalized voting rights.(Digitized from a microfilm copy of a title originally held by Department of State in Providence, Rhode
Island).
