1842-02-23, Message concerning the Disputed Territory

SEE ALSO 53683 Senate No. 67 On February 23, 1842, Governor Davis sent a message to the Legislature about the Disputed Territory [the
boundary between the U S and Canada had been settled on paper, but never on the ground.] Davis had heard that a special envoy was coming from Great Britain
to "adjust controversies." He wanted to be sure Massachusetts was included in the discussions because it owned half the land on the United States
side. The demarcation line was obvious to the United States, but Great Britain had resisted a settlement for decades. Davis wanted to get a sense of
the Legislature in case various compromises were offered to which he had to respond quickly. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held
