1835-03-24, Armstrong, Message on election of Militia Officers

no Senate number The Adjutant General of the militia had sent Lieutenant Governor Armstrong the results of the officer elections and basically
asked if the men must be given commissions, even though they were not desirable officers. Armstrong passed the question to the Attorney General J. T.
Austin. Austin sent a long reply. Aspersions had been cast on the characters and fitness of some of those elected. However, aspersions were not legal
evidence, and since the election form had been properly observed, the men elected had to receive their commissions. Austin said he understood that
the men might not be up to their jobs and might even bring shame to their units, but they had been properly elected and that was that. It was a sad
