Dutton & Wentworth, 1832. Pursuant to the Legislature's request, Governor Lincoln sent a special messenger to Governor Smith of Maine to ask for
copies of any correspondence about the boundary negotiations. The messenger returned with the dispiriting news that Smith had only received unofficial
communications about the negotiations that he did not think he could divulge. Governor Lincoln then waxed eloquent about the loss of "the friendly
regard of a sister state." Massachusetts had little way to look after its interests [many thousands of acres of public land] without a seat at the table.
