Encyclopedia Britannica (classic 11th ed.)
|
|
The Encyclopaedia Britannica; A dictionary of arts, sciences, literature and general information: 11th ed., Vol. 1–28, with a Vol. 29 comprising an index to the whole, Encyclopædia Britannica Company, Cambridge, Eng., at the University Press, 1910–11, all published. (This 11th Edition of the “Britannica series” is by far the most esteemed by scholars. As one authority describes it: “The Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th Ed., compiled in collaboration with Cambridge University … comprises a major permanent reference source. A milestone in publishing history, it was … the last attempt to produce an encyclopedic summary of human knowledge in a single set of volumes ..." {The Reader’s Adviser; A Layman’s Guide to Literature, 13th Ed., Vol. 3, p. 2} Another authority, A.J. Walford, calls it "the most extensive and in many ways the best ever produced. Articles were substantial, scholarly, comprehensive, thorough and well-illustrated—for their time." {Walford’s Concise Guide to Reference Material: London, The Library Association of London, 1981, 030.2-20} Much of the text contained in the 11th Ed. was dropped from subsequent editions. The 11th Ed. remains the quintessential reference source for law-related historical data prior to 1911. Patrons are alerted that, to make this title more usable on line, the pages of the books have been “tagged” in two separate sequences. As each volume is pulled up online, two versions of that volume will appear. The first version is tagged to the original numerical pagination of the pages. This is the version of preference for those using the Index Volume {No. 29}, which is keyed to the numerical pagination. The second version offered for each volume is tagged to the alphabet, which will facilitate browsing. A glance at the breakout provided below gives guidance on the range of the alphabet covered in each volume: V.1, A to Andro; V.2, Andrus to Austria; V.3, Austria, Lower to Bisectrix; V.4, Bisharin to Calgary; V.5, Calhoun to Chatelaine; V.6, Chatelet to Constantine; V.7, Constantine, P. to Demidov; V.8, Demijohn to Edward; V.9, Edwardes to Evangelical; V.10, Evangelical Ch. to Francis Joseph; V.11, Franciscans to Gibson; V.12, Gichtel to Harmonium; V.13, Harmony to Hurst,; V.14, Husband to Italic; V.15, Italy to Kyshtym; V.16, L. to Lord Advocate; V.17, Lord Chamberlain to Mecklenburg; V.18, Medal to Mumps; V.19, Mun to Oddfellows; V.20, Ode to Payment; V.21, Payn to Polka; V.22, Pull to Reeves; V.23, Refectory to Sainte-B.; V.24, Sainte-C. to Shuttle; V.25, Shuvalov to Subliminal; V.26, Submarine to Tom-Tom; V.27, Tonalite to Vesuvius; V.28, Vetch to Zymotic; V.29, Index.)
