The Preface describes the contents of this volume as “[t]wo courses of lectures, delivered by the Author while he [held] the Corpus Professorship of Jurisprudence in the University of Oxford [and previously] published with the titles ‘Village-Communities in the East and West,’ and ‘The Early History of Institutions.’” There are eleven essays, including The Sacred Law of the Hindus, Ancestor-worship and Inheritance, Theories of Primitive Society, and The Decay of Feudal Property in France and England; and an Index.
