Edited by Samuel L. Gouverneur, his grandson and administrator. Published by J.B. Lippincott & Co. (1867). 274 p. This work of political science includes a comparative historical view of the government of the United States and the Republics of Athens, Lacedemon and Carthage. In a Preface, the editor states that this work was begun by Monroe after he retired from the Presidency in 1825 and remained incomplete at his death in 1831.
