Stephen, New Reasons for Abolishing the Slave Trade, 1807
News reasons for abolishing the slave trade; Being the last section of a larger work, now published, entitled “The Dangers of the Country”; by the
author of “War in Disguise”: by (James Stephen), 3-67 pp., London, pr. for J. Butterworth, 1807. (Lacks TOC & index. James Stephen, 1758-1832, an
admiralty lawyer, campaigned vigorously against what he viewed as American abuse of neutrality status to aid the French side during the Napoleonic wars. The
works mentioned in the title are: War In Disguise, London, 1805, & The Dangers of the Country, Phil., S. M. Brandford, 1807. Stephen’s crusade was
quite influential in that Great Britain adopted many of the strictures that he recommended, leading to the confrontations at sea between U.S. commercial
ships and the British Navy that culminated in the War of 1812. The print text of this title was scanned from Lincoln’s Inn Library pamphlet volume
Carlton 121, foliated pagination 23A to 61A.)
