Bannister, 1870A, Writ of Mandamus to Stay Colonial Wrongs
|
|
Official morals reformed; Or, a new writ of mandamus to stay wrongs in the colonies and India; With colonial and Indian appeals now pending; A letter to the Lord Chancellor: n.a., (Saxe Bannister) (2)+6-15p, s.l., s.n., 1870. (Lacks TOC & index. The letter is signed on p. 15: “Brighton, 31st August, 1870, Saxe Bannister, Lincolns Inn.” For more on Bannister, see the extensive notes on his title Memoir on the Colonization of Natal, 1839, elsewhere on this site. They detail how Bannister, who served as the attorney general of the Colony of New South Wales from 1823 to 1826, was dismissed from his office for “injudicious zeal” with regard to the welfare of the native population. In this tract, published in his eighties, he relates how he spent the decades since 1826 soliciting interest in his case from various ministers and members of Parliament, some of whom apparently considered him to be a pest. Here he bemoans the latest refusal of the highest authorities to review his case and suggests that a new species of writ of mandamus be created to require official review of abuse of office by colonial official in cases such as his own. The print text of this title was scanned from Lincoln’s Inn Library pamphlet volume LP 97.)
