Studies in Colonial Nationalism, by Richard Jebb, x+336p, London, Edward Arnold, 1905. (Jebb advances the thesis that the road to closer union between England and Canada, Australia/New Zealand, and South Africa, lies in developing alliances with them rather than in striving for some sort of imperial federation. He advocates the recognition of the growing nationalism of the dominions as the guiding principle of closer coherence between the mother country and its self-governing colonies. In his summary: “Alliance recognizes separate national aspirations; federation aims at national unity.” On another front, in pages 25–59 Jebb provides a valuable account of the Canada/U.S. borders negotiations and the interplay between the three parties concerned: Canada, the United States, and Great Britain. Jebb contends that in some ways Great Britian was willing to downplay Canadian interests in favor of currying friendship with the United States. )
