(This muckraking work set out to demonstrate that the the English Establishment of the time was rotten to the core in virtually all of its manifestations and activities. Despite its sometime shrill tone, the book is a repository of an enormous number of useful facts. With particular reference to British India, it provides on pp. 350-376 a comprehensive and in depth history of the British East India Company during its first 230 years. While, given its source, the narrative dwells on the less savory aspects of Company rule in India, it neverless appears in the main to be factual and provides a host of details difficult to unearth elsewhere.)
