Wakefield — A Letter from Sydney and Other Writings: by Edward Gibbon Wakefield: xiii+256p, London/NY, J.M. Dent & Sons/E.P. Dutton & Co., 1829. (Wakefield, 1796–1862, exerted a strong influence on British colonial policy. His writings center on the colonial experience of Australia, which he never visited; although he was instrumental in the founding of South Australia, and New Zealand He spent the last nine years of his life in New Zealand, long after he wrote this book. Wakefield greatly influenced the general debate between colonists and mother country on the appropriate amount of self-government in the colonies. He accompanied Lord Durham in a private capacity on his mission to Canada, and is believed to have influenced, perhaps even written part of, the famous Durham report This compendium of extracts from his main works concentrates on his initially anonymous Letters From Sydney and his The Art of Colonization. The latter work is described by Bell & Morrell in their Select Documents on British Colonial Policy, 1830–1860, as one of the seminal documents in the development of British colonial policy.)
