Description and Holding Information
1971, UK/Trucial States, Termination of Special Treaty Relations
Exchange of notes concerning the termination of special treaty relations between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the
Trucial States (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umn al Qaiwain, Ras al Khaimah and Fujairah); 1 December 1971…: n.a., 20p, Cmnd. 4941, London, HMSO,
1972. (Lacks TOC and index. In both English and Arabic languages. Under an 1853 treaty Great Britain pledged to protect the Trucial States from outside
aggression, but left them to their own devices with regard to internal affairs. In 1892 the six Trucial States signed an “agreement of exclusivity”
with Great Britain that left the latter responsible for their external affairs. Final termination of British jurisdiction occurred in 1972, and the
Trucial States entered into formal federation on 1 April 1972 as the United Arab Emirates. This document records part of the process whereby the U.K.
ceased to treat the Trucial States as a sort of quasi-protectorate and recognized that future relations would involve dealing with an independent country.
